On June 1, CGPI EMP(Executive Management of Philanthropy)2018 Spring Cohort Opening Ceremony was held in Shenzhen.

This cohort will continue to build a modern philanthropic concept under the background of philanthropic economy, advocate social innovation through “philanthropic knowledge” curriculum system, promote usage of professional philanthropic knowledge innovation to solve social problems, and cultivate philanthropic talents with a strong sense of social mission.

EMP teaching will be based on four major parts including value and mission, thinking, methodology, and management tools. It will implement the practical teaching model that integrates theoretical courses, practical courses and action plan, and build an interdisciplinary curriculum system to thus highlight its teaching features of “action learning, dual tutorship, innovative thinking, problem orientation, and global resources”.

On June 1, CGPI EMP(Executive Management of Philanthropy)2018 Spring Cohort (Session 9) Opening Ceremony was held in Shenzhen. Gao Zimin, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government; Liu Zhiyong, Deputy Head and Member of the Party Leadership Group of Futian District, Shenzhen; Ma Weihua, Chairman of the Board of CGPI; and Ms. Geng Ming, Board Director of CGPI and Deputy Director of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation China Office were present for this ceremony. President Wang Zhenyao and faculty of CGPI attended the ceremony along with 71 trainees from 13 mainland provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions as well as Hong Kong SAR, and President Wang hoped that the trainees would better understand “truth”, “philanthropy” and “great love” to make philanthropy more powerful!

Gao Zimin, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, welcomed the trainees to study in Shenzhen on behalf of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government. In his speech, CGPI in Shenzhen has cultivated hundreds of senior management talents with international vision, theoretical accomplishments and strong executive ability for philanthropy, making outstanding contributions to building Shenzhen into a “city of philanthropy”. Shenzhen is a city of innovation, charm, and volunteers, and its development is inseparable from philanthropy. The most important thing to sustainable development is social harmony and intergenerational equity, and these are exactly the true quality of philanthropists. Therefore, Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government is wiling to provide better support and services for the development of philanthropy and CGPI. Deputy Mayor Gao also invited CGPI trainees sincerely to offer their valuable opinions on Shenzhen’s development combining their philanthropic experience.

Ma Weihua, Chairman of the Board of CGPI, expressed his sincere thanks to Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Deputy Mayor Gao for their strong support to CGPI’s construction and development. In his speech, Shenzhen is a city of both innovation and love. Chairman Ma reviewed CGPI’s founding, pointing out that philanthropy has been transforming and needs integration with finance to do charity in business model – “summarized in three phrases, new philanthropy means to manage philanthropic institutions with modern enterprises’ management methods, allocate philanthropic resources under market principled, and achieve philanthropic purpose by financial means”.

Geng Ming, Board Director of CGPI and Deputy Director of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation China Office, shared Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s experience and achievements in promoting global health. She encouraged the trainees to set bold goals and use the platform built by CGPI to acquire knowledge, make connections, find people with similar ideas, explore innovative solutions, carry out unprecedented cooperation, and devote to eliminating inequities together. At last, she quoted Mr. Gates’ saying to encourage new trainees: it is exactly human intelligence and wisdom that can light up dim future.

President Wang Zhenyao gave new trainees his best wishes that the motto of CGPI is “All-embracing Love and Benevolence”. He hoped them to learn Chinese virtues including “benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trust” with philanthropism, truly understand the meaning of “truth”, keep enriching their knowledge, better understand their mission, learn great love, open their mind, and value the process of learning philanthropic knowledge. President Wang said “learning philanthropic knowledge is actually to make philanthropy more powerful. This needs us to interact, learn, and energize philanthropy through learning so that we can truly have wisdom and power to lead philanthropic improvement in China and the world”.

CGPI collects quality resources and faculty in the world, and advocates application-oriented research, action learning, and unity of knowledge and action. According to Alumni Development Report 2017, there were 855 alumni philanthropic programs last year covering 31 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and special administrative regions across the nation; the alumni’s institutions spent over RMB 4.7 billion on philanthropy and had donation income of RMB 6 billion; 96% of the alumni made personal donations with a total amount of over RMB 100 million; over 42% of the alumni had cooperation with each other, and 35% had practice in philanthropic finance and social innovation.

Adhere to action and address social problems innovatively

CGPI EMP2018 Spring Cohort happened to open on the 69th International Children’s Day. Xiao Xingping, an alumna at EMP2016 Spring Cohort (Session 5), Chairman of CGPI Alumni Board and Deputy Dean of China Lions School of Philanthropy, said in her speech on behalf of the board that the board has been upholding the concept of co-building, sharing and symbiosis, hoping that all the alumni from EMP Session 1 to 9 would jointly build the great philanthropic environment in China, share common philanthropic resources, and grow together.

CGPI Alumni Board, founded in October 2016, has gathered alumni and over 200 trainees from EMP, GPL, ELP and other projects. It will attract more industrial elitists and partners to become a leading philanthropic organization, practice CGPI’s mission of “Leading Social Civilization with Philanthropy”, promote infrastructural construction actively, deepen services, and strengthen connection. The council, supervisory board and secretariat perform their duties respectively. And nine special committees, three regional branches and two industrial branches are set; especially the establishment of Child Philanthropy Branch has attracted great attention.

Based on the board’s connections, the alumni have integrated projects for the establishment of the Child Philanthropy Branch, built interactive alliance, served and developed alumni partnership. They devote themselves to building a matrix of child service projects through county-level service pilots to further support the government to systematically improve local children’s conditions; and explore other philanthropic projects of the alumni board to connect all the branches horizontally and help solve more social problems.

EMP advocates “action learning and crossover cooperation”, aiming to build a knowledge chain, make knowledge dynamic, and apply acquired knowledge in action. EMP Action Plan has attracted over 80 trainees for participation and promotion of over 30 projects’ initiation and implementation. Among these, 2 action plans of EMP2016 Spring Cohort won gold award and bronze award in 2017 China Public Welfare Project Contest. The alumni’s institutions have kept earning social recognition and praise, and won many social awards.

Ye Dawei, an alumnus from EMP2013 Autumn Cohort (Session 1), Executive Deputy Secretary-General of CGPI Alumni Board and Secretary-General of Yao Foundation, said “EMP has been changing philanthropic talent structure in China and rebuilt a philanthropic ecological chain in the past five years. Learning in CGPI does not mean to simply learn philanthropy, we also need to learn tools for modern management”. He shared Ray Dalio’s visit to CGPI Beijing Teaching Center which moved him. Dalio said: “I always tell myself to be an instructor instead of a leader.”

As an alumna at EMP2017 Autumn Cohort (Session 8), Li Hongmei, Hostess for CCTV’s Humanities of Great Power program and Head of Overseas Chinese Think Tank Press Center, shared her changes from EMP study. She said that coming to CGPI was the biggest turning point in her life. “In CGPI, there are classmates with strong positive energy, we can get rid of much impetuousness from society and systematically learn how to make philanthropy more effective.”

On site, absent EMP alumni including Li Xiaobo (an alumnus from GPL/ELP, Founding Chairman of CGPI Alumni Board, Partner of Fenghe Capital, runner of Abbott World Marathon Majors, and successful contestant in 777 Challenge), Hu Guanghua (Secretary-General of China Social Assistance Foundation), Yang Xiuli (Judo Champion in 2008 Beijing Olympics, Chief Coach for high weight class in National Women’s Judo Team), and Deng Fei (Initiator of Free Lunch for Children and Huakailing Philanthropic Village) sent their best wishes to new EMP trainees by video.

Openness, diversity, crossover

CGPI EMP2018 Spring Cohort will continue to build a modern philanthropic concept under the background of philanthropic economy, advocate social innovation through “philanthropic knowledge” curriculum system, promote usage of professional philanthropic knowledge innovation to solve social problems, and cultivate philanthropic talents with a strong sense of social mission.

Meanwhile, based on an overall analysis of previous experience, trainee feedback, and curriculum evaluation, EMP2018 Spring Cohort will optimize its curriculum for fine and classical compulsory courses as well as lightweight and modularized optional courses.

Therefore, EMP teaching will be based on four major parts: value and mission, thinking, methodology, and management tools. It will implement the practical teaching model that integrates theoretical courses, practical courses and action plan, and build an interdisciplinary curriculum system to thus highlight its teaching features of “action learning, dual tutorship, innovative thinking, problem orientation, and global resources”.

The average age of new trainees in EMP2018 Spring Cohort is 40.7 years old. Among these people, 92% are from the decision-making level and management, 49% have master degrees or above, 23% have experience of overseas study or work, and 24% have MBA/EMBA diplomas.

Trainees in this cohort are more diversified. Apart from indispensable representatives of philanthropic organizations, there are also wealth philanthropic elites from American International Assurance, GF Securities, China Resources Bank, Embraer S.A., and Xuntu Sporting Goods (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. as well as domestic and foreign industrial leaders including South University of Science and Technology Education Foundation, Beijing Women’s International Exchange Center, and Lien Aid.

By May 2018, EMP has had accumulatively about 480 alumni, including alumni of EMP Cohort (Session 1 to 8), alumni of EMP Courses, and European alumni of EMP Scholarship Program. They will join hands to fly the dream of philanthropy from CGPI.

Zhang Biwei, Chairman and Founder of Art Dream, and Yang Xin, General Manager of Dinghan Culture, delivered speeches on behalf of new trainees of Beijing Class and Shenzhen Class respectively. Zhang Biwei said, “firstly, we are all responsible for our lives, keep pursuing the meaning and value of life, and hope to be meaningful to others and the society. This is philanthropy. Secondly, we all believe that our lives are connected to others’ and we are uniquely responsible to ourselves, other people, and the world. This is righteousness. Thirdly, everybody hopes to do philanthropy most effectively and achieve their life value through continuous learning. This is our wisdom. It is based on the similarities of philanthropy, righteousness and wisdom that we can come to CGPI to learn”. Yang Xin said that she hoped that every philanthropist could remain childlike innocence and work happily on philanthropy. “We acquire philanthropic knowledge together in the new era, stay more united and work philanthropically with philanthropic heart, deed, and power, and become the nucleus in the philanthropic era.”

Witnessed by all the participants, trainee representative of EMP Session 8, Zeng Haibin (Chairman of Guangzhou Tianhe Xiaokuang Art Promotion Center presented the institute banner to the trainee representatives of EMP Session 9, Ding Gan (Deputy Director of Cooperative Development (Enterprise Engagement) at Shenzhen One Foundation) and Jin Xia (President of Xiaoshan Gaoqiao Jinfan Experimental School, Hangzhou). Chairman Ma Weihua and President Wang Zhenyao of CGPI presented institute badges to the new trainees. The opening ceremony came to a successful end.
